Necklace Length Guide: 40, 45 or 50 cm? How to Choose the Right Chain

The same pendant can look completely different on a 40 cm chain and on a 50 cm chain. Length decides where a necklace sits, how it frames your face and whether it layers well with the pieces you already wear. Here is how to choose.

Where each length sits

LengthInchesWhere it sitsBest for
35 cm14"Close around the neck, choker stylePearl chokers, statement pieces
40 cm16"At the collarboneSmall pendants, open necklines, petite frames
45 cm18"Just below the collarboneThe most popular length, name necklaces, everyday pendants
50 cm20"A few centimeters lower, above the necklineLayering under a shorter chain, crew necks
60 cm24"Mid-chestLarger pendants, over sweaters

These positions are approximate. Neck size, height and the weight of a pendant all change where a chain falls. A heavier pendant pulls the chain a little lower.

If you are not sure, choose 45 cm

A 45 cm (18 inch) chain is the most versatile length. It sits just below the collarbone on most people, works with almost every neckline and shows a pendant without hiding it under clothing. Most of our necklaces come on a 45 cm chain for this reason.

How to measure at home

  1. Take a necklace you already love and lay it flat. Measure it from end to end, including the clasp.
  2. No necklace to compare? Wrap a piece of string around your neck where you want the chain to sit, mark it and measure it flat.
  3. Add 5 cm to your neck measurement as a minimum for a comfortable fit.

Layering made simple

Layered necklaces look intentional when each chain sits at its own level. Leave about 5 cm between lengths, for example 40, 45 and 50 cm. Mix textures: a fine cable chain, a pendant, and a chain with more presence, such as a wheat or paperclip chain. Keep the heaviest piece at the bottom.

Choosing a length as a gift

  • Name and initial necklaces: 45 cm keeps the name visible above most necklines.
  • Small pendants: 40 to 45 cm, so they sit near the collarbone.
  • Religious pendants and crosses: 45 to 50 cm is traditional and comfortable for everyday wear.
  • Not sure of their style: 45 cm is the safe choice.

Chain style matters too

Fine cable and rolo chains suit delicate pendants and layering. Wheat, rope and paperclip chains can be worn alone as a statement. Whatever you choose, a solid gold chain can be shortened by a jeweler later, so a slightly longer chain is the more flexible choice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular necklace length?

45 cm, or 18 inches. It sits just below the collarbone on most people and works with almost every neckline.

What length is best for a pendant?

For small pendants, 40 to 45 cm keeps them near the collarbone. Larger pendants look balanced on 50 to 60 cm chains.

Can a gold chain be shortened?

Yes. A jeweler can shorten a solid gold chain and reattach the clasp. Plated chains are harder to adjust because cutting them exposes the base metal.

How far apart should layered necklaces be?

About 5 cm between each chain, for example 40, 45 and 50 cm, so each one sits on its own level.
