Can You Swim with Gold Jewelry? Chlorine, Salt Water and Sunscreen
Can you swim with gold jewelry? What chlorine, salt water and sunscreen do to 14K gold, why rings get lost, and how to clean pieces after a swim.

The best way to store gold jewelry is to keep each piece separate, dry and lying flat or hanging, so that pieces cannot scratch or tangle with each other. Solid gold will not rust or corrode in a drawer, so good storage is mostly about preventing scratches, knots and lost earrings.
Here is the system our goldsmiths recommend, from everyday chains to pearls and travel.
Gold is a relatively soft metal. 14K gold is harder than pure gold, but it can still be scratched by anything harder than itself, including other gold pieces, stones and especially cubic zirconia or diamond set jewelry. Throw five pieces into one dish and within weeks you will see fine scratches on polished surfaces and knots in every chain.
The metal itself is not the worry. Solid gold does not tarnish the way silver does (our article on whether 14K gold tarnishes explains why), so you do not need special anti-tarnish cabinets for it. You do need separation.
Every piece should have its own space. This can be a jewelry box with small compartments, a drawer insert with velvet slots, or individual soft pouches. What matters is that pieces do not touch.
Chains are the hardest thing to store well. A few habits solve almost every knot:
If a chain does knot, do not pull. Lay it on a flat surface, add a drop of baby oil or a little dish soap, and tease the knot open with two fine pins. Then wash and dry the chain.

Pearls are organic and much softer than gold or any stone. A gold chain or a CZ setting can scratch a pearl's surface in a single trip around a jewelry box. Store pearl pieces apart from everything else, ideally in a soft fabric pouch.
A few pearl-specific rules:

Gold itself is not affected by humidity, but the bathroom is still the worst place to keep jewelry. Steam, hairspray, perfume and cleaning products all settle on pieces and dull the shine. Some stones and pearls are also more sensitive than gold.
| Material | Main storage risk | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Solid 14K gold | Scratches and tangles | Separate compartments, closed clasps |
| Cubic zirconia set pieces | Stones scratching other pieces | Keep apart from polished gold |
| Pearls | Scratches, dryness, chemicals | Soft pouch, lie flat, away from cosmetics |
| Amethyst | Long exposure to strong light | Closed box, out of direct sun |
| Enamel details | Chips from knocks | Padded compartment |
A closed drawer or box in a bedroom, away from a sunny windowsill and a radiator, is ideal. If you live somewhere very humid, a small silica gel sachet in the box is fine for gold, but keep pearls out of that compartment so they do not dry out.
Travel is when most jewelry gets lost or knotted. Keep it simple:
And take less than you think you need. Two or three pieces you love will cover a week.
Every order from our atelier arrives in an illuminated jewelry box, free: a small light turns on when you open the lid. People often ask whether it is just for presentation. It is good for gifting, but it also makes a perfectly good home for the piece it came in. The box has a padded insert that holds the piece in place, so a ring, pendant or pair of earrings can live in it between wears. Kept closed in a drawer, it is just the kind of single-piece compartment we recommend.
Storage is a good moment to catch problems early. As you put a piece away, glance at the clasp, run a chain through your fingers, and look at stones under a lamp. If a prong looks lifted or a jump ring looks open, set the piece aside and message us. Our lifetime guarantee covers craftsmanship. When pieces look dull, a gentle wash brings them back, as described in our guide to cleaning gold jewelry at home.

It is better not to. Silver tarnishes and can leave dark marks on neighboring pieces, and the two metals scratch each other. Keep them in separate compartments.
Fasten the clasp before storing, then hang each necklace or lay it flat in its own space. For travel, thread fine chains through a drinking straw.
Not really. Solid 14K gold does not tarnish in normal storage. Anti-tarnish strips are more useful for silver or lower-karat pieces.
Not for long periods. Pearls do best in a soft fabric pouch with some air, laid flat and kept away from other jewelry.
Yes. Our illuminated box has a padded insert that holds the piece securely, which makes it a good individual storage space between wears.
