How to Buy Gold Jewelry Online: A Goldsmith's Checklist for Solid Gold

To buy gold jewelry online safely, confirm four things before you pay: the exact karat and whether the piece is solid gold, what the stones really are, how returns work, and what shipping and import duties will cost you at the door. If a listing answers all four clearly, you are most of the way to a good purchase.

We are a small family atelier in Istanbul's Grand Bazaar, and we sell only through Etsy, so we see online buying from both sides. This checklist is what we would tell a friend before they ordered gold from any shop, including ours.

1. Check the metal: karat, solid gold and the hallmark

The first question is not "is it gold?" but "how much gold, and is it all the way through?" Online, the words used for metal matter a great deal, and the same photo can describe very different products.

  • Karat should be stated plainly. 14K, 18K or 10K, written in the title or description, not just visible in a photo.
  • "Solid gold" should be said in words. Look out for gold-plated, gold-filled, vermeil, "gold tone" or "gold layered". These are different products with a thin gold surface over another metal. Our guide to solid gold vs gold-filled vs gold-plated explains the difference in detail.
  • Hollow or solid construction. Some chains and hoops are made hollow to save metal. That is not dishonest if disclosed, but it changes how the piece wears and how easily it can be repaired. See hollow vs solid gold jewelry.
  • The stamp. 14K gold is usually stamped 14K or 585, meaning 58.5% pure gold. If you are unsure what a number means, our guide to the 585 stamp covers it.

A good listing will mention the stamp and may show a close-up photo of it. If neither appears, ask. Every piece we make is solid 14K gold stamped 585. We never use plating, gold-filled or semi-hollow construction, and we say so on each listing.

2. Read the listing details, not just the photos

Photos sell, but the description is the contract. Product photos are often taken very close up, so a small pendant can look twice its real size on your screen. A good listing gives you enough information to picture the piece on your body, not just on a white background.

DetailWhy it mattersWhat a clear listing says
DimensionsPhotos are often zoomed in and pieces look bigger than they arePendant height and width, hoop diameter, band width
Chain lengthDecides where a necklace sitsLength in cm or inches, adjustable or fixed
Size optionsRings and bracelets must fitA size range and how to measure
Clasp typeAffects security and ease of useLobster, spring ring, snap closure and so on

A useful trick: take a ruler and look at the stated measurement on your own neck, wrist or finger. For sizing, measure what you already own rather than guessing. Our ring size guide and necklace length guide walk you through it.

3. Look for honest stone disclosure

Stones are where online listings most often blur the truth. Phrases like "diamond look", "sparkling stones" or "simulated" can hide what is actually set in the piece. A trustworthy seller names the material in plain words.

  • Cubic zirconia (CZ) is a lab-made crystal. It is a perfectly good stone, but it is not a diamond. Our cubic zirconia jewelry guide explains what to expect from it.
  • Natural stones should be named as natural, with the stone type. We list pieces such as natural amethyst and blue topaz in our natural stone collection.
  • "Diamond-cut" describes a faceted finish on the metal, not diamonds. If you see it, read what diamond-cut gold means.
  • Colored stones that look like emerald or ruby may be colored CZ. If the listing does not say "natural", ask.

Most of our pieces use CZ and we say "CZ" in the title. A piece with a natural stone says so too.

4. Understand the returns and cancellation policy

Gold is a considered purchase, and you should be able to change your mind within a reasonable window. Before ordering, find out:

  1. How many days you have to return the piece.
  2. Whether personalized or custom items can be returned (often they cannot, because they are made for you).
  3. Who pays return shipping and how refunds are issued.
  4. Whether you can cancel shortly after ordering.

On Etsy, the exact return window appears on each listing. Many of our pieces accept returns within 45 days, and you can cancel within 2 hours of purchase. Check the specific listing, because windows can vary by item.

5. Read reviews the right way

Reviews are useful, but read them with a goldsmith's eye. Star ratings tell you little. The detail inside the review tells you more.

  • Look for comments about how the piece looked in person compared with the photos.
  • Look for mentions of the clasp, chain thickness and how it held up after weeks of wear.
  • Read the lower-rated reviews too, and notice how the seller responds to problems. A calm, specific reply is a good sign.
  • Be cautious with shops that have very few reviews but very bold claims.

Reviews also cannot replace checking the piece yourself. If you want to test a piece once it arrives, our article on how to tell if gold is real covers simple checks and when to visit a local jeweler.

6. Work out shipping, insurance and import duties

A surprise customs bill is one of the most frustrating parts of buying jewelry from abroad. Ask these questions before checkout:

  • Is shipping tracked and insured? Gold should never travel untracked.
  • Who pays import duty? Some shops ship "duties unpaid", which means you pay the carrier on delivery before you can receive your parcel.
  • What is the delivery estimate? Look for an estimate on the listing rather than a promise in a chat message.

We ship free by tracked, insured express to the USA, the UK and Europe. For US orders, import duty is prepaid, so there is nothing to pay at the door. For other countries, local import fees may apply. The delivery estimate is shown on each Etsy listing. Every order arrives in a free illuminated jewelry box with a light that turns on when you open it, which is handy if the piece is a gift.

7. Message the seller before you buy

A short question is the best test of an online jewelry shop. Ask something specific, such as the band width of a ring or whether a chain is solid. A good seller answers clearly and does not dodge. Our owner, Şerif Temizkan, answers messages personally, and we would rather you ask than guess.

Also ask about after-sale care: is there a guarantee on craftsmanship, and can a broken clasp be repaired? We offer a lifetime guarantee on craftsmanship.

Your quick checklist

  • Karat stated and "solid gold" written in words
  • Stamp mentioned (14K or 585 for 14K gold)
  • Dimensions, chain length and size options listed
  • Stones named honestly: CZ, natural stone or none
  • Return window and cancellation policy clear
  • Reviews that describe the piece in real life
  • Tracked, insured shipping and a clear answer on duties
  • A seller who answers questions

If you are buying gold online for the first time, simple pieces are the easiest start. A plain chain or a pair of studs is hard to get wrong, and our earrings collection is a good place to begin.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to buy gold jewelry online?

Yes, if the seller states the karat and solid construction clearly, names the stones honestly, ships tracked and insured, and offers returns. Messaging the seller with a specific question before buying is a good test.

How do I know online gold jewelry is solid and not plated?

The listing should say "solid gold" in words and give the karat, and the piece should carry a stamp such as 14K or 585. Words like plated, filled, vermeil or gold tone mean it is not solid gold.

Will I pay import duty on gold jewelry ordered from Turkey?

For our US orders, import duty is prepaid, so nothing is due at the door. For other countries, local import fees may apply depending on local rules.

Can I return gold jewelry bought on Etsy?

Many sellers accept returns, but windows vary. Many of our pieces can be returned within 45 days, and the exact window is shown on each listing.

What does CZ mean in a jewelry listing?

CZ stands for cubic zirconia, a lab-made crystal that looks bright and clear but is not a diamond. A good listing names it plainly.
